Reef Credit Method Development

Service: A grazing land management (GLM) method for landholders to earn Reef Credits

Client: Verterra, GreenCollar and Agriprove

Location: Queensland

Start: 2024

Completion: 2024

In collaboration with GreenCollar and AgriProve, Verterra developed a grazing land management (GLM) Reef Credit Method based on monitoring improvements in ground cover.

The method which has been approved by the Regulator, describes the approach to achieve and quantify reductions in Fine Sediment from rural landscapes through improved grazing land management.

The aim is to increase farm productivity and resilience, improve overall soil health, and reduce fine sediment run-off to the Great Barrier Reef. Projects under this method will occur in conjunction with other ecosystem service market opportunities, specifically soil carbon farming on grazing lands.

A critical breakthrough in development of the method was the application of our spatial analysis expertise to allow us to remove seasonal variation to enable accurate spatial quantification of variations in vegetation cover, a key contributor to erosion.
